#IWSG August: Surprise! School Starts Next Week

First Wed of Every Month

August 7 question - Has your writing ever taken you by surprise? For example, a positive and belated response to a submission you'd forgotten about or an ending you never saw coming?

The awesome co-hosts for the August 7 posting of the IWSG are Renee Scattergood, Sadira Stone, Jacqui Murray, Tamara Narayan, and LG Keltner!

I used to love when my kids went back to school. Now that I'm an elementary school librain, well, my sympathies are in full swing for the children.

I met a lot of my writing goals this summer. My oldest son (computer science major) is helping me design a new website with Wix. I can't wait to share his amazing talent soon!

To answer the above question, it's hard to stay positive in this tough writing world. Most surprises that come our way aren't good. I love when my writing takes me to another level--ususally after a long run, a round of editing, and a successful binge watching of Stranger Things.

One positive thing I'm looking forward to is FALL. My favorite time of the year. Story ideas flood my mind when the leaves begin to change. Hello, pumpkin spice! Hello, spooky tales. Hello, Hocus Pocus!

Haunted Hannibal Ghost Tours
It has begun.

Did you meet any goals this year? Any surprises this summer? Are you ready for the school year? Ready for fall? Ready to take the Haunted Hannibal Ghost Tour?

  1. It's crazy to think kids are back in school already. Where did the summer go? Looking forward to seeing the new website :)

  2. Oh, I do love a good ghost tour! I'm too far away, though--in Tacoma, WA. I left teaching five years ago, but that old rhythm still rings in my bones. September feels like the start of a new year. I hope yours is filled with wonderful experiences with the kiddos.

  6. Haha! I love everything Fall too. You forgot It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I live near the Whaley House (it's listed as one of the most haunted houses in the country) and took their midnight tour. Very interesting!

  7. Fall always meant impending winter. I am a summer gal and moved to the tropics of Mexico. I do go back to the States to see my family often and do get to appreciate the season.

    1. I always wonder how people live without the seasons. I could do without winter!

    1. Can't wait for cooler temps! I've never taken this tour. I might need to just do it this fall.

    1. Only if winter is a mild, balmy 50 degrees and no snow. ;-)

  11. Like practically everyone else above, fall and winter are my favorite seasons!

Congrats on hitting your writing goals. I've just finished the first draft of my first novel, so I'm pretty psyched! Revisions loom, but I'm on to the next project in the meantime.

  13. Considering I had hoped to have all my editing done by now and I'm still rewriting chapters, I'd have to say I haven't quite met my goals. Good thing I didn't have high expectations. There's still a bit of the year left. :)

  16. Reaching goals is grand. Yeah, I'm ready for fall, but not snow.

  17. Oh! I would really take that tour! Congratulations on goals achieved. That's so huge and deserves a celebration. I love fall too, but I don't like it when it gets to that first freeze. I haven't reached my own goals yet, but I don't think I realized how hefty they were when I set them :)

  20. Fall is my favorite time of the year too.
I'm not happy with my writing this year - too little done. Maybe it would be better in the fall.

  21. Congratulations on meeting lots of your writing goals this summer, Jennifer! I always feel nostalgic when the new school year starts. I roam the school supply aisles and sometimes buy things. I miss my second and third grade kiddos and my educator friends. I loved my teaching career, and I love retirement; but, boy, I miss all those daily hugs and the delight of teaching! Wishing you a wonderful year as a school librarian!

  22. I love the fall. I used to look forward to school days more when my kids were in elementary school because it wasn't stressful, at least, on my end. Now that they are in high school and middle school, the amount of homework, studying for tests, instrument practice, and school plays--whew! It's draining for me, so I know the kids are exhausted.
