September #IWSG: Change Is in the Air

First Wed of Every Month

Question: Have you ever surprised yourself with your writing? (For example, by trying a new genre you didn't think you'd be comfortable in?)

Change is in the air, or it's just pumpkin spice. My favorite season descends upon us like a teenage boy consuming a Taco Bell Quesarito: fast and furious.

In my current work in progress, I decided to switch things up. Because of the idea of branding, I plan to continue with MG mysteries, but will launch this new story in a different direction. Where's the fun in writing if you can't take detours and end up in an alternate dimension?

Writing contests might be considered "surprising yourself" with your writing when you actually win.

Over the weekend, I received good news! My current MG mystery (out with many different agents!!) Link Lakowski & the Dead House won third place in the "Awesome Openers" 2017 Rate Your Story Contest. WEEKEND MADE.

I even took a screen shot to savor the moment.

Hope you are trying new things in your writing world!

  4. Congratulations! That is a nice surprise!

I use a similar figure of speech that compares winter coming to a teenage boy, but yours is way less obscene... ;-P

  10. Hi Jennifer! Have you set up a gravatar yet? For wordpress people like myself who are in the hop, we can't find you, because your website isn't linked to your gravatar, which is the little icon that shows up when you comment. And because you're listed as "The Writing Game" on the IWSG page, I couldn't search for you by name. It took me a few minutes to Google you, and even then, the first website that came up was your book website, not The Writing Game. I checked on Twitter and saw you recent tweet about your IWSG post, and that's how I found you. The point is that I don't want you to miss out on people returning your comments because they can't find you. :) Congrats on your competition win by the way! That is so amazing!!!

  16. Congratulations on that excellent news! Hope you toasted your success with some mulled cider! I'm brand new to IWSG, so I'm a little late with this comment (I'm working my way through all the participants posts a few a day). So happy to have found the group. I've discovered a fabulous community here! You should print that screenshot and frame it. Hope you're having a great weekend, and happy writing to you! :)

  19. Congratulations on your award! I bet that makes you feel great! I do try writing outside of my genre. When I do, I amaze myself that I've been able to come up with it. It's good to go outside your comfort zone.
